Raw talent helps art student continue higher education.

Senior art student, Bridget Franz, dreamed of her own art studio. She wanted a space to freely create, and when it was about to become reality, her funding fell through.

Expenses from her academic and artistic endeavors were adding up. She had to make a choice. Either drop out and pursue art independently or take on the continued expenses of higher education. She chose a third option.

In a defining moment, she entered the Annual Detroit Artists Market Scholarship and Exhibition Program, open to all Wayne State art students. Judges selected 10 finalists to receive the John F. Korachis Scholarship Award based on their originality, dedication and remarkable artwork.

Franz fit all criteria famously. She was a finalist. She was funded.

She didn't pursue a studio space after winning the award, but focused her mind and money on academia. “The award helped me realize there is still a place for me at Wayne State," said Franz. "Out of pure passion for art making, I invested my time in research instead."

Research connected Franz with the university and ultimately fed her relationship with the city.

“It has created a platform for me to voice opinions about Detroit, art and how Detroit relates to the rest of the world in regard to creation and creativity," she said.

After graduation, Franz wants to stay connected to the university art community and once again pursue the studio space of her dreams. One she can share with her colleagues this time, as part of an artist co-op.

"I'm an obsessive painter and crafter, and I wouldn't have it any other way," said Franz.

At one point, Franz wondered if she would move forward with her education at Wayne State. With the help of scholarship support, she crafted a future full of friendship, creativity and opportunity.
